I have recently taken an interest in photography and I plan on taking some courses in the future. Right now I have been trying to learn from online tutorials and already I have enjoyed the benefit of being able to take my own photos and use my own textures for my projects. Although you can’t always take the perfect picture that you need for a project, you can have more control over your project by taking your own pictures. Below are 8 reasons why designers should learn photography.

- If you have a certain idea for a design you can control many things such as the angle, perspective, and lighting in order for it to match your vision. You have the power to get the picture exactly how you need it for your design.
- You won’t have to spend hours and hours searching for the perfect photograph and run the risk of not finding it.
- You won’t have to throw out a good idea because you can’t find the right picture that you need for that idea to work.
- Sometimes even on free stock photography web sites the best pictures will cost you money, with some basic photography skills you can take your own pictures and you won’t have to purchase stock photos as often or maybe not at all.
- Millions of people use stock photography websites, I have come across several designs with over used images I had seen before on different projects. With your own photos your art work will be unique.
- No one likes to read long user agreements, and even if you do the chance that you will overlook something important is quite high (for example, using a photo that can only be used on personal projects on a commercial project instead) if you break the agreement you can be sued by the owner. If your using your own photos you won’t have to worry about copyright infringement and you won’t have to store stock photos as a proof of purchase.
- If your looking to make some extra cash, you can start selling your photos and textures on stock photography sites such as sxc.
- You will be developing a new skill and if you become good enough at it you can start offering services in photography, this may give you an advantage over competing designers and help you to win over a new client.

Thanks for the comment Benjamin, on number six that’s what I was talking about.
Very much agree with you…I also try to experiment on my own…I don’t have much luck though…but will never stop trying.
I am a graphic designer and a photographer, too. And you are so right, I have lots of benefits in photography which I use in my graphic designing career.
Does it ever occur to you to actually commission another creative and hire a real live photographer??
That’s true, photography helps a lot as a designer, i’m studying photography right now and i learn so much, it’s a complement of the design.
Thanks for the comment Haddon Davies, when working for a client it is better to have a real photographer. But photography is a good skill for designers to have especially for personal projects where your probably not going to want to pay for something your just experimenting with.
very true i agree with you… i think photography is must for designers especially for graphic designers. Great article thanks for your post Santana!!!
Sure I agree with some of this. I am currently looking for good camera cuz I know better what photos I need and it’s hard to find them sometimes. Also I really like it as a hoby and I have a camera but I want something more professional. Thanks for this post.
I’m also saving up so I can buy a better camera, Thanks for leaving a comment!
